10 Years of WeWash: A Decade of Digital Billing Systems in Shared Laundry Rooms

In January 2026, WeWash celebrates its tenth anniversary. Since its founding in 2016, WeWash has pursued a clear goal: to digitalize shared laundry rooms and make their use simpler, more transparent, and more efficient for everyone involved.

What began as a clear idea has developed over the past ten years into an established solution for shared laundry rooms in residential buildings, at campsites, in student housing, in serviced apartments and micro-living concepts, in the hospitality sector, in apartment buildings and employee housing, as well as in holiday accommodations.

2016: The Start of WeWash

With the founding of WeWash in 2016, the foundation was laid for a new way of using shared laundry rooms. At that time, coin-operated machines, manual billing processes and a high administrative workload were still widespread. From the very beginning, WeWash set out to change this by focusing on digital processes, cashless payment and a strong emphasis on user-friendliness – for operators as well as for users.

It quickly became clear that digitalizing the laundry room not only increases convenience, but also provides noticeable relief for operators by significantly reducing effort and complexity.

A Decade of WeWash: Key Milestones

In the years that followed, the WeWash solution was continuously developed and adapted to new requirements:

  • Launch of the WeWash App: Less than a year after its founding, WeWash reached an important milestone with the go-live of the WeWash App. It enables the digital booking of washing machines and dryers, cashless payment, and keeps users informed at all times thanks to real-time status updates.

  • Move to a new office: As success grew and the number of installations and users increased, the team expanded as well. WeWash moved into larger offices at Sendlinger Tor in Munich.

  • Multiple awards: The WeWash concept received numerous awards from different organizations and across various industries.

  • International expansion: The WeWash solution was rolled out in an increasing number of countries.

  • App relaunch: To stay at the cutting edge of technology, the app was relaunched in 2020 with an improved user journey, a new design, additional features, and the latest technology.

  • Scan2Wash: To make using shared laundry rooms even easier, WeWash developed a QR-code-based solution that works without an app download or user registration.

  • Change in management: CEO Philip Laukart left WeWash on September 30, 2025. The organization was subsequently restructured to prepare for the next phase of growth.

All of these milestones follow one clear objective: to simplify processes and make shared laundry rooms future-proof.

“In the early months, I travelled all across Germany for every single WeWash Box installation. Many kilometres, many overnight stays. Since then, a lot has become more professional – and it was precisely this phase that helped us truly understand how shared laundry rooms are used in everyday life.”

Patrick, Country Lead Switzerland, part of WeWash since 2017

“WeWash has evolved step by step – from a small team where everyone worked in the same room and we even shared desks with the management team, to clear structures, defined responsibilities, and departments with their own offices. Yet the close collaboration has always remained the same.”

Felix Schmidt-Thomé

Felix, Head of Customer Satisfaction, started 2017 as a working student

“In the beginning, many technical topics were still unfamiliar to me. Even so, I was welcomed openly and with great support – without prejudice and with strong trust in my abilities, also as a woman in a technical environment. WeWash actively promotes the continuous development of its employees.”

Martina Luisetto, Head of Customer Projects

Martina, Head of Customer Projects, part of WeWash since 2021

“When I look back on the past ten years of WeWash, I am particularly proud of our IoT product. It is designed with such flexibility that almost any washing machine can be digitalized – regardless of manufacturer, year of production, or type of connection. In theory, it could even be used to connect a Bosch coffee machine.”

Jan Allenberg, Head of Developing

Jan, Chief Technology Officer, part of WeWash since 2017

“At WeWash, age doesn’t matter – what counts is the willingness to keep learning. I felt this trust and respectful way of working from the very beginning.”

Ulrike Hütter, Sales

Ulrike, Sales Assistant, part of WeWash since 2023

“At WeWash, I was able to get deeply involved right from the start – from joining as a working student, to becoming a full-time employee, and later moving into Customer Projects. What has always inspired me most is the idea behind the company, the product, and the team.”

Eileen, Customer Projects, started 2019 as a working student
